Mortal Kombat 1 sells a themed special attack for Halloween. But for many fans, that doesn’t go over well at all

Microtransactions in games are rarely very popular. But when new content disappears behind a paywall in a full-price title, it always drives fans to the barricades. Recently, the pricing policy of Call of Duty or Diablo 4 was criticized, now there is also Mortal Kombat 1 trouble. The trigger is a Halloween-themed special attack.

Much money, little in it?

New to the Mortal Kombat 1 in-game store is a Fatality, which is a deadly special attack that you can use against a weakened opponent. In keeping with the theme, you put a pumpkin on your opponent’s head, and then kick it in. CautionAs usual in Mortal Kombat, the whole thing is of course pretty brutal:

This Halloween fatality costs $10 in Mortal Kombat 1…a $70 full price game

The problem for many fans stems from the price of the new attack: This one costs a bunch of premium currency, for which you’ll have to spend 10 euros and dollars respectively. In a game that you buy for 70 or even 100 euros in the more expensive version, this is simply too much in the eyes of many gamers.

In the Reddit thread linked above, there is also a large consensus that microtransactions have no place in full-price games anyway. For example (MostNobyl) writes:

The only way to get rid of microtransactions is to make people stop buying anything. And good luck with that, because there are a lot of people buying this crap.

While (some fans) are even of the opinion that one should boycott such games completely, others see the topic more relaxed. For example (Homicidal_Pingu) writes:

To be honest, I care very little about this. It doesn’t make the game easier to win, it doesn’t hide a character behind a paywall, and it’s just a seasonal cosmetic. If you don’t think it’s worth the price, don’t buy it.

What do you think of the Halloween DLC for Mortal Kombat 1? Do you think the price is justified or too high? And do you think microtransactions are generally harmful? Are they justifiable under certain circumstances, or even to be welcomed? Have you already purchased similar content in games for real money? Feel free to write us your opinion in the comments!
