A mod called Empire II has recently received a new update and now truly lives up to the name.

Although Total War: Empire was already released in 2009 and thus has over 14 years under its belt, an official successor is estimated to be still very far away. If it is ever developed at all. However, the strategy game is considered an underrated classic and is one of the most unusual spin-offs of the long-running series.

If you have a soft spot in your heart for Empire and its campaign based around 18th century imperialism, however, it might be more worthwhile to return now than ever before. After a recent update (from the massive mod Empire II) a complete package has been put together, which already comes very close to a successor

YouTuber TheTerminator has created a video explaining what makes this mod so good in detail and goes into a lot of improvements:

What kind of mod is this?

This massive mod is a comprehensive amalgamation of numerous mods for Total War: Empire. Included are numerous new features, improvements and also revised mechanics from the base game. The result is impressive in both scope and complexity. Here are a few highlights of what the mod does to your game:

  • Over 4,500 different units are in the game, spread across a full 48 playable factions.
  • There is a playable co-op campaign.
  • Units dynamically adapt to new eras and are thus modernised.
  • Recruitment and recovery of your armies and generals has been reworked.
  • There is a new user interface and historical character portraits.
  • The graphics and animations have been reworked.
  • The AI has been improved throughout and now makes more comprehensible decisions, although this also makes it enormously challenging.
  • An army can now consist of 40 units.

The only area that falls a little short for a true sequel is, logically, the graphics. The game looks better and even the campaign map has been reworked, but the game is still nowhere near the level of 2023.

What is your opinion of this massive mod? Have you been waiting for a long time to finally return to the 18th century or is Empire not one of your favourite spin-offs of the series? Would you like to see a real sequel to the strategy game, or would you prefer a Medieval 3 first? Post your opinions in the comments!
