Age of Empires 1 returns – as a major expansion for AoE 2!

The addon Return of Rome revives numerous contents of the legendary strategy classic. We have all the info for you.

Strategy fans can rejoice, because there will soon be new fodder for Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition The special thing about it: The addon called Return of Rome brings back content from Age of Empires 1 in a modern guise. We have collected all the currently known info for you.

The comeback of a classic

The big DLC will be released on May 16, 2023 for PC and Xbox consoles. Pricing will be around 15 euros due, the game can already be pre-ordered (on Steam) now. Whether the addon will end up in Game Pass like the main game is still unclear.

If you don”t own Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition yet, you can also buy Return of Rome on Steam in a bundle with the main game – normally you”ll have to pay around 35 Euros for it, but if you buy it now, it”s only 22 Euros.

New Return of Rome content

You can”t really see much of the new game content yet. But there is already some information about what you can expect with the upcoming DLC.

  • A total of 18 new civilizations you can play, 16 of which are already known from Age of Empires 1, including Persians, Egyptians and the Greeks. In addition, there are two completely new races, the Southeast Asian Lac Viet and the Romans, which fans have been longing for.
  • Three fresh campaigns are supposed to provide enough long-term fun, which are supposed to be especially atmospheric thanks to full dubbing: Sargon of AkkadPyrrhus of Epirus and Trajan Of course, fans will enjoy the gameplay improvements from Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition, such as gates, formations and improved AI.

  • D3 game mode, which is based on a set of rules especially popular in Vietnam. In it, players have more time at the start of a game to build cities and figure out their tactics, since until the Bronze Age is reached, they can only fight with a single unit. In addition, building walls and towers is not allowed.
