A VR game developed by a single person impressively demonstrates how good water can look thanks to Unreal Engine.

Solo developer “Khena B” has taken on one of the biggest challenges in the gaming industry: Developing an underwater VR game with realistic water physics.

Realistic water animations have always been considered one of the most difficult things to master in computer graphics. This makes the first video clips he has shared of his solo project all the more impressive. In future, anyone who has never been diving could virtually explore the depths of the oceans with impressively realistic graphics.

Diving in and out looks very realistic

The game doesn’t have a name yet, however it looks a bit like Subnautica in VR. On his Twitter account, Khena B keeps showing video clips of the current development status of his game.

In a video from 25 January, he demonstrates diving in and out of the water as well as the underwater physics of the VR game. With some of the animations, such as throwing stones, you notice that it is still an early version of the game and that there is still a need for optimisation. But the scenes already seem very real, which could only be more true when wearing VR glasses.

In a (further animation) the developer shows how it could look even more realistic when diving in and out of the water. A soft-focus effect simulates the effect of opening the eyes under water.

General Remarkable: The Unreal Engine 4 is used instead of the latest version 5.0, which shows how much potential an “old” engine can have. Nevertheless, the Unreal Engine 5 goes one better, which can be seen, among other things, in the impressive videos of MAWi United:

4K videos impressively show how realistic video game deserts could look in the future

Khena B gives us a taste of what virtual diving tours could look like in the future. Would you be interested in a realistic diving simulator? Write us in the comments!
