To coincide with gamescom, Microsoft is releasing a free update that makes five German cities more beautiful and detailed than ever before. Plus, another huge batch of free content is coming in November

Friends of the skies have reason to celebrate. Not only because Microsoft Flight Simulator will soon be celebrating the 40th anniversary of the series, but because of the massive updates that come along with it.

But even now there is reason enough to get back into the cockpit: In keeping with gamescom, five German cities have been depicted in much greater detail since 24 August than they were before.

German cities in new splendour

The places were reworked by photogrammetry. Another word for this is image measurement. This means that with the help of photographs, the location and shape of the city is more accurately measured and thus clearly displayed on your screen in greater detail.

The newly revised cities are:

  • Hanover
  • Düsseldorf
  • Cologne
  • Dortmund
  • Bonn

Some German cities have already been implemented with this procedure, including Berlin, Hamburg, Munich or also Aachen. With the new locations, 24 German cities are thus included in Microsoft Flight Simulator by photogrammetry.

Huge content update in November

In addition, Microsoft is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the simulation series by bringing you a fat load of free content. There’s already a trailer for it, which you can watch right here. Below we summarise what exactly is in the update.

As you have seen, you will finally be able to fly helicopters in Flight Simulator! In addition, some historic aircraft are coming into your hangar. Among them is the 1947 Hughes H-4 Hercules, the largest floating aeroplane of all time!

In total, the 40th Anniversary Edition will include:

  • 4 commercial airports
  • 10 glider airfields
  • 12 Flying machines
  • 14 Helipads
  • 20 missions from past titles in the game series

The 40th Anniversary Edition is free for Microsoft Flight Simulator owners and Game Pass members and will be released on 11 November 2022.

Will the updates get you back in the cockpit or will the new content leave you cold? Feel free to let us know in the comments!
