Release for the Digimon fans! After a long development time and many delays, a new Digimon game is finally coming in July.

Almost four years have passed since the announcement of Digimon Survive. After numerous delays, Bandai Namco has now announced a release date of July 29.

Suddenly things are happening very fast

Originally, the role-playing game was supposed to be released in 2019 before being pushed back to 2020 and then 2021 before Bandai Namco stopped giving any further concrete dates. In addition to technical difficulties as well as the Corona pandemic, the game has now undergone a developer change from Witchcraft to Hyde. But now it seems it has finally escaped from development hell.

On 20 April, a brief producer update announced a western release on 29 July. So for the first time, there’s an almost simultaneous release date for a Digimon game in the West (Japan launches on 28 July) and fans can look forward to the summer.

So, after Digimon Cyber Sleuth in 2018, gamers among Digimon fans finally get a refill and a fresh batch of nostalgia reuniting with Agumon and the other Digimon.

The darkest Digimon? Story in Digimon Survive

Digimon Survive’s protagonists are a group of students who unexpectedly find themselves in the Digimon world on a field trip and have to fight for their survival there. You take on the role of Takuma and his partner Digimon Agumon and fight your way through the story in a mix of visual novel and tactical RPG à la Fire Emblem or XCOM.

Of course, the developers are keeping vague about story details for the role-playing game, but early on they’ve sprinkled hints that it could be the darkest Digimon game yet. They have hinted that depending on the decisions and actions of the players, some characters could also die.

Mix of visual novel and tactical RPG – gameplay in Digimon Survive
According to the developer, players can expect a 7:3 mix of Visual Novel to Tactics RPG when it comes to gameplay. Interactions with other characters and Digimon will influence the story and even the potential digitations of your partner Digimon.

Battles take place on a tactical overview map and are turn-based. You should be able to move your Digimon freely across the map to launch attacks or use other abilities and digitations.

In total, the game should take a good 40 hours to complete, or 80-100 if players want to reach all the endings and story routes.

Digimon Survive will be released on 29 July for PC, PS4/5, Xbox and Nintendo Switch.
