2022 E3 will not take place, neither physically nor digitally. In the meantime, organiser ESA has commented on the reasons.

As in 2020, there will be no E3 trade fair in 2022. This news spread like wildfire on Twitter and has now also been officially confirmed by organiser ESA. But it is not supposed to be the final farewell of the fair. We have all the information on the cancellation and some exciting alternatives in the summer of games for you.

No E3 2022 – why?

In a statement to IGN, the organisers reveal the reasons for the cancellation. They say they want to devote all resources to next year’s E3 show – 2023. It goes on to say:

We will devote all energy to making a revitalised physical and digital E3 happen next summer. Whether you enjoy it on the show floor or from your favourite digital devices, Showcase 2023 will bring the community, media and industry together again – in a completely new format and as an interactive experience. We look forward to bringing E3 2023 to fans from around the world live from Los Angeles

So, in concrete terms, this means that the organisers are, at least officially, firmly expecting to be able to host a classic E3 with visitors again in 2023. In addition, however, the show is also to be held digitally again – in other words, a classic hybrid event, which have become quite common since the Covid 19 pandemic.

Of course, the summer of gaming doesn’t fall flat because of this cancellation, there are plenty of other events where new titles are revealed and tons of info is released. 2020 was already a year without an E3, after all. And in 2021 it was purely digital – this event wasn’t bad, but it still shouldn’t be repeated in this form

What alternatives are there to E3?

Traditionally, a particularly large number of games fairs take place in the summer, including of course gamescom, which this time is being staged as a hybrid event. In addition, there are many other large and small fairs.

Summer Game Fest: The show, hosted by Geoff Keighley, takes place in June 2022. Many developers are likely to head to this event to showcase their games. Keighley is obviously looking forward to this as well:

Xbox Event: Microsoft is also planning its own big event in the summer of 2022, at which many exciting announcements are guaranteed to await PC gamers, such as information on Starfield. There are no details or an exact date yet.
