The survival building game RimWorld only relies on 2D graphics in Vanilla. A modder now shows that it can also be done completely differently.

Hach, RimWorld! Your minimalist 2D graphics also find many lovers, but scare off many a building game fan – although a strong game is hidden behind the unimpressive façade.

The well-known scene modder “Yayo” is now working on a possible solution to the dilemma: a 3D mod. Well, strictly speaking a 2.5D mod that depicts two-dimensional sprites in a three-dimensional landscape.

Those interested can subscribe to the mod as a beta version directly via the Steam workshop and try it out for themselves. In a video, the modder presents the preliminary version of Yayo’s Rim 3D:

An unusual sight

Yayo’s mod does not change any fundamental aspects of the RimWorld graphics. Only the perspective shifts to the side and structures such as walls and fences are displayed with three dimensions.

The game characters, on the other hand, remain the familiar 2D sprites that now move through the game world as upright objects. The same applies to trees, boulders and furniture placed by the player, except for the movement of course.

The mod can also be adapted to the desired game experience with numerous fine adjustments. For example, players can change the height of the 3D walls, the field of view or the angle of vision.

However, the mod does not create much more than an interesting insight and the wow effect. Users have to do without using the mouse in 3D and can only move the camera with the WASD keys. Instead, they can switch back and forth between classic 2D and mod 3D at any time.

This makes the mod a kind of cinema mode in which players can watch the action. Building and managing continues to take place in the usual two dimensions.

RimWorld is currently experiencing its strongest phase ever: After the release of the new DLC Ideology, the build-survival hit is setting new player records
