While Worlds 2023 was still in full swing, the departure of Evil Geniuses and the Golden Guardians from the LCS was announced. Accordingly, the 2024 league will take place with eight teams

After T1 clinched its fourth world title last weekend, it was announced on the sidelines that the North American top league, the LCS, will consist of just eight teams next year. In an interview with journalist and scene expert Travis Gafford, Riot Games’ President of Esports John Needham stated that both EG and the Golden Guardians will no longer be part of the league in the 2024 season. The reasons for this vary.

In the case of Evil Geniuses, there is a suspicion of financial bottlenecks, among other things. Only recently, the US eSports organization dissolved its own Dota 2 roster, while the Valorant team apparently had to accept salary cuts.

For the Golden Guardians, on the other hand, the decision came from the owner, the Golden State Warriors, himself. They want to focus more on their actual core business in the NBA in the future, which is why they will discontinue all League of Legends activities.

It remains to be seen whether the league will be expanded after the 2024 season. The fact is that only eight teams will be competing in the LCS in the upcoming season
