Many people are critical of AI, including in games. A recent experiment with The Witcher 3 on YouTube shows how things could potentially be improved.

When it comes to using AI in games, many people tend to be critical, as comments on GlobalESportNews repeatedly show (apart from AI for NPCs and similar elements).

In addition to unconvincing results, there are also broader questions behind this, such as the threat to jobs for real artists and other creative professionals, as well as the human soul in games.

While the new game Codex Mortis is making headlines for claiming to be the world’s first 100% AI-generated game, a recent YouTube video puts an old title in the AI spotlight: The Witcher 3.

However, the community’s reactions are much more favorable in the second case than in the first.

Which video are we talking about?

The YouTube channel Aillusory has posted a video about The Witcher 3 entitled The Witcher 3 but it’s AI slop – Reimagined by AI .

It shows familiar scenes from the game that have been visually reworked using an unspecified AI.

You can watch the 1:41 minute video yourself here:

The community’s reaction is clear

Although this is explicitly AI-generated content about a game with many enthusiastic fans, the reactions are almost universally positive.

At the time of writing, it has received over 3,600 thumbs up and only 106 thumbs down from around 120,000 views.

Most of the comments also show that people are very impressed with the result:

Honestly, this is AI garbage of pretty good quality. (@HeretixAevum)

AI will become the best Reshade filter before it is used to develop games. (@misapheonix)

So, um… When can we get this in real time, because damn it, I want it, and I want it NOW. (@sebastianwolf1724)

Understandable feedback

Even though the video repeatedly shows clear signs of AI use, such as image artifacts in motion and a certain blurring over the scenes, the visual result is quite impressive.

The Witcher 3 from 2015 has also aged relatively well in terms of graphics.

However, in terms of aspects such as the level of detail of the characters and environments, the faces and their animations, and the lighting, the visually AI-enhanced version goes one step further.
The ReShade comment from the title of this article may also resonate with many of the positive reactions:

  • ReShade is a tool that uses graphics filters to customize the look of games to your liking.
  • It requires very little processing power and offers many customization options. However, improvements such as those seen in Aillusory’s video are not yet included.
  • Imagine if an AI filter could significantly improve the visuals of games with few resources without changing their basic character – that sounds very tempting indeed!
  • Whether this will ever be technically possible is another question entirely, however.
