When expectations collide

Ubisoft took an unusual step with Star Wars Outlaws: Instead of a classic shooter or LEGO adventure, they opted for an open-world game set in the popular universe. The ambitions were high, but the success fell far short of expectations.
Technical problems, a lack of polish, and a muted response from the community not only depressed Metacritic ratings but also sales figures. CEO Yves Guillemot spoke unusually candidly about the disappointing results at a shareholders’ meeting.
According to him, the title had “minor weaknesses” at launch, which were quickly fixed but caused massive damage to the game’s launch. The media environment didn’t help either – Guillemot hinted that the Star Wars brand wasn’t in the best light at the time of release.

He was probably referring to the mixed reviews for the series The Acolyte, which had been released shortly before. However, it is nothing new to fans of the franchise that quality and audience appeal can quickly change in the Star Wars universe.
The series Andor, for example, was celebrated – and it is precisely these ups and downs that also affect game releases.

Now the Nintendo Switch 2 is set to bring salvation. On September 4, Star Wars Outlaws will be released in a revised version for the new console – according to Ubisoft, it will even be a “new version of the game.” This Gold Edition includes two story expansions and exclusive missions, which should provide an additional incentive to buy.

Ubisoft has high hopes for this relaunch. The technical stability that was lacking in the original release should be in place from the start this time around. The atmosphere surrounding the game could also change – after all, the Star Wars franchise is back in the spotlight thanks to upcoming series such as The Mandalorian & Grogu. Grogu and is back in the spotlight.

For fans, this means it might be worth taking a second look at Outlaws. The developers want to show that they have learned from their bumpy start and are determined to deliver a polished gaming experience this time around.
