If EA won’t do it, the community will have to step in. Fans are taking matters into their own hands to fulfill a long-held wish for a Battlefront sequel.
All we have left of an official Star Wars Battlefront 3 are the rumors about its development, and those have been pretty unfounded since 2021 at the latest. Currently, however, fan voices are once again calling for a sequel to the Star Wars shooter. However, those responding are not the developers.
Star Wars Battlefront 3 as a fan mod
While the Battlefront Classic Collection didn’t exactly cause a roar of cheers last year, the 2017 re-release is currently enjoying great popularity again. So the launch of the fan project, which aims to unofficially continue the action, comes at just the right time.
The title of the mod is clear: Star Wars Battlefront 3 Via Nexusmod, you can turn your Battlefront 2 (2017) into the unofficial sequel. The fan expansion is currently still in alpha, but already adds some new content to the game:
- Eleven new heroes, including Ahsoka Tano and Mace Windu
- Eleven new villains, including Darth Revan and Darth Bane
- A fourth combat ability for each character
- Force flips and increased flying speeds
- New maps: Geonosis Arena, Mustafar, and Coruscant
The new characters also come with unique abilities and play styles. Numerous additional fighters are planned for the future, which will expand the lineup to over 100 characters.
Not the only replacement for Battlefront 3
However, the new mod is not the first attempt by fans to create a substitute for the missing sequel. Battlefront 3 Legacy has been in the community forge since 2018. This project also uses Battlefront 2 as its basis, but the original from 2005. The mod uses assets borrowed from Free Radical Design, the studio that worked on Battlefront 3 between 2006 and 2008.
The era of the Clone Wars and the Galactic Civil War is taken into account, a new HUD adorns your interface, and you can play additional maps, including Coruscant, Cato Neimoidia, Bespin, and Dantooine. In addition, new heroes are playable in all Assault modes, such as Obiwan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, Darth Vader, and Boba Fett.
There’s no question that fans are eagerly awaiting a proper Battlefront 3: over 14,000 votes have already been cast in favor of its development on Change.org Incidentally, the timing of this campaign is not all that surprising.
Battlefront 2 recently enjoyed a second spring on Steam. After the end of the acclaimed Andor series, Steam saw a rapid increase in player numbers. As the only modern multiplayer shooter in the Star Wars universe, it has fought its way into the hearts of amateur Star Wars fans. And many players are remembering that right now.
