The poorly kept secret has finally been revealed: the pirate spin-off of the AC series is getting a remake called Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced.

It should come as no surprise to anyone, but Ubisoft has finally put an end to the rumors and officially confirmed that Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag is getting the long-awaited remake.

The new edition of Edward Kenway’s adventures on the high seas will be released under the title Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced.

Insiders have been reporting on an upcoming remake for years, and many fans have been eagerly awaiting the return of the pirate setting.

Now Ubisoft has published a blog post containing the first artwork for the upcoming game. What is known about Black Flag Resynced?

What we know about the remake

Ubisoft’s blog post only confirms that the remake is coming and what title it will be released under. Here you can see the artwork that was shared, featuring Captain Edward casually balancing on the sail of his ship:

A release date has not been announced, nor have the target platforms – but we’re going to take a wild guess and say PC and current consoles, i.e. PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Black Flag Resynced could appear on the horizon in 2026, but hold off on the excitement until it’s officially confirmed – Ubisoft has recently undergone another major restructuring. Our editor Michi Obermeier has invented time travel to help out!

We also don’t know yet how far the remake will go. Better graphics and improved technology are a given, of course, but there may also be new content in the remake.

What will happen to the present-day sequences this time, for example? Ubisoft has not commented on this yet.

The blog post reveals details about other AC projects that are in the works or in planning. Here are the most important ones:

  • Assassin’s Creed Witch is still in development and will be a darker installment in the series, presumably set in the late Middle Ages or early modern period.
  • However, no concrete news about AC Witch is expected for the time being. The creative director recently left the project.
  • The PvP experiment AC Invictus is also still in development after several years of silence surrounding the project.
  • Assassin’s Creed Jade, a new installment set in ancient China for mobile devices, is also still on the agenda – it is supposed to come with co-op.
  • A live-action series based on Assassin’s Creed is in the works at Netflix and is expected to be released in the foreseeable future.
  • AC Unity is getting a 60 FPS patch on consoles.

What would your ideal remake of Black Flag look like? Are you hoping that Ubisoft will rework many sequences and add new content, perhaps delving deeper into Edward’s backstory? Or would you prefer a technically and visually modernized reissue that remains as close to the original as possible in terms of content? Feel free to let us know in the comments.
