The pen is mightier than the sword: In the role-playing game Esoteric Ebb, we fight tentacles with words.

What happens when a solo developer mixes orcs and elves with politics? Esoteric Ebb is a narrative heavyweight that fills the gap left by Disco Elysium. nbsp; For fans of deep dialogue, it’s the highlight of the year. Even the turn-based combat is text-based, as the gameplay video shows.

At first, everything seems familiar with magic and classic attributes. But Christoffer Bodegård breaks with convention. Your abilities speak to you and comment on the action. With 700,000 words in English, the game is a gigantic interactive book. Battles and spells take place almost exclusively in the brilliantly written dialogue windows. This also impresses our tester, and the rating is correspondingly high.

The story is unusual:  Five days before an election, you have to solve a crime. At your side, the goblin Snell stumbles through political discourse. Whether you’re debating water spirits or failing rehearsals, failure is part of the concept. Those who engage with the masses of text will experience a clever role-playing game that goes far beyond the monotony of the genre.
