Some people love beautiful construction in Anno, others love efficiency—and still others thrive in chaos. That’s why the new brush in Anno 117 is causing such a stir on Reddit.

Are you team perfect symmetry or do you prefer chaos? On Reddit, most Anno fans seem to prefer the latter. The new brush in Anno 117, which can be used to draw particularly inefficient fields, is proving surprisingly popular.

User Takarazuka012 shares a short video here showing the brushwork. The field he created himself looks very organic, but also very uneven.

Chaotic, but beautifully organic

If you press the mouse wheel while drawing fields in the new Anno, you can switch between predefined angles (45 or 90 degrees) and a free brush mode, which allows you to create creative fields like these:

Did you notice the new field tool option? Press the scroll wheel to change between 90, 45, or a brush and paint the most inefficient fields ever!

User idubsydney responds with (probably not entirely serious) indignation, saying that the distance between the field and the street makes him extremely sick. Others agree with him tongue-in-cheek – generally speaking, everyone who meticulously integrates every field and every stone into their overall vision of the cityscape with surgical precision probably feels the same way.

Other players have  better control of their inner monk and praise the natural look of the fields. They also say that it is much less fiddly to optimize the space for farmland. Others emphasize that they think the feature itself is great, but will probably never use it—after all, it is a little hidden.

Anno 117: Pax Romana is scheduled for release on November 13, 2025. However, some content creators and members of the press will be able to play it in advance. The eighth main installment and successor to Anno 1800 is set in ancient Rome, where we are entrusted with two provinces as governors. For the first time, you can choose your starting region yourself. The strategy game will be released for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series.

How do you prefer to lay out your fields? Will you use the brush function? Let us know in the comments!
