Star Citizen is probably the most expensive and ambitious MMO in the world. At the current Free Fly Event, you can fly eight spaceships for free.
The Free Fly Event is running in Star Citizen until July 14 to mark the big Foundation Festival 2025. In plain language, this means that you can now download the space MMO for free and fly eight spaceships for free.
And if the immense complexity of the game has put you off, there’s good news: The community celebration also marks the launch of new start-up tools for junior pilots.
There’s a referral service with rewards for recruited players with 50,000 aUEC starting capital (which is a lot of in-game cash), reduced starter packs, fresh tutorials and a mentor system.
Ideal time for new pilots
To play, simply follow these steps:
- Create an account with Roberts Space Industries
- Download the Star Citizen client from RSI
- Download the game, log in and start flying
The timing is ideal: A new chapter for Star Citizen has just started with the new Alpha 4.2 under the title “Storm Breaker” with lots of new content and numerous improvements.
These include a realistic weather system with rainfall, new sandbox activities, mech combat suits and improved cockpit controls.
Also exciting: After eight years of waiting, we now have the first real boss enemy in Star Citizen: the giant sandworm!
Possibly the most complex game in the world
Star Citizen normally costs at least 64 euros to get started – that’s how much the standard version costs.
But if you want to get started with insured spaceships and entry fee, you can easily spend 80, 130 or even 1,230 euros (for the Ultimate Explorer Pack with six vehicles).
In total, the mega project has already raised almost 800 million US dollars via crowdfunding since its announcement in 2010.
Still in alpha, Star Citizen will one day be a complex space simulation, role-playing game, trading simulation, first-person shooter and mining simulation all rolled into one – all fully interlinked and in a persistent game world with dozens of accessible planets, space stations and ships.
The single-player campaign for Star Citizen, Squadron 42, is also due to be released in 2026. The lavishly staged story spin-off to the MMO features top-class actors such as Henry Cavill, Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson and Andy Serkis.
