Developers are being asked to make greater use of the PS5’s energy-saving mode in order to optimize games for the upcoming PS6 handheld console.
It’s no secret that both Sony and Microsoft are working on new consoles. According to rumors, Sony is developing two new hardware products.
In addition to the classic PlayStation 6 console, Sony is also said to be planning to release a PS6 handheld. There are now new indications of this.
This is what happened:
- In the latest video from Moore’s Law is Dead, the well-known leaker reports on an exchange with a game developer who develops games for Sony’s PlayStation:
- According to the developer, Sony has sent emails to developers urging them to directly support the console’s energy-saving mode.
- Sony is also said to have offered developers tutorials and documentation.
Good to know: The PlayStation’s energy-saving mode reduces the console’s energy consumption, but also reduces the resolution or image quality.
The developer claims that Sony did not simply request support for the PlayStation’s energy-saving mode, but also asked developers to keep the refresh rate at 60 FPS and reduce the resolution instead.
Sony would want to ensure that current games for the PlayStation 5 would also run at a good refresh rate on the upcoming PS6 handheld.
The developer’s full quote
This week, we received emails from Sony strongly promoting low-power mode… almost as if we would have to support it directly at some point. They provided tutorials and guides explaining the following:
We shouldn’t just lower frame rates to meet the requirements of LP mode, but instead try to maintain 60 FPS by reducing resolutions. Razor CPU (a CPU utility for PS5 development) walkthroughs to help us find CPU bottlenecks so we could reduce CPU utilization and even look for ways to reduce the number of threads our game was using.
It’s becoming increasingly obvious that low-power mode is a Trojan horse to prepare PS6 handheld support before launch, and frankly, they seemed a little upset about how few developers have directly supported it so far.
Sony has not yet commented on an official release date. A release date in late 2027 or early 2028 is considered possible.
Now we want to hear your opinion. What is most important to you in the upcoming PlayStation handhelds? Are there any PlayStation games you would like to play on a handheld? Feel free to leave us a comment.
