Slay the Spire 2 is storming the Steam charts with huge player numbers and fantastic ratings since its early access launch. We’ll let you know when you can expect our review.

It’s as if half the world had been waiting for it: When Slay the Spire 2 launched in Early Access on March 5, the rush was so huge that even Valve’s Steam servers temporarily threw in the towel.

If you had trouble logging in or buying games last night, now you know who was to blame. The sequel to the legendary deck-building roguelike is finally here and is breaking all records right out of the gate.

Steam servers capitulate to the onslaught

It was clear that Slay the Spire 2 would be a success: its direct predecessor shaped an entire genre and inspired countless imitators. But what happened right after launch probably exceeded even the wildest dreams of the developers at Mega Crit.

Within a few hours, player numbers skyrocketed. At its peak, over 282,000 of you were playing simultaneously. The already extremely successful predecessor reached around 57,000 concurrent players at its peak – so the sequel has almost quintupled that record right out of the gate.

This allowed the indie game to leave big AAA titles such as Bungie’s new shooter Marathon behind and effortlessly secure first place in the global Steam top sellers. At times, the rush was so enormous that the Steam shop page completely crashed for about half an hour.

Extremely positive: According to the reviews

But it’s not just the bare figures that are impressive; the mood in the community could hardly be better: A whopping 97 percent of the approximately 6,200 reviews to date are positive.

  • BOON: Amo“Already worth the money. The strategic depth is significantly greater than in Part 1. The new mechanics in Iron Clad alone are amazing.”
  • Medicus“My first run went absolutely smoothly and I didn’t find any bugs, despite it being in early access. It already felt finished and mature.”
  • Lady Aluna“Slay the Spire 2 co-op lets you experience the joy of saying, ‘Trust me, bro, this combo works,’ right before everyone dies. 11/10.”
  • Meditroid“At first, I was very skeptical about whether Slay the Spire 2 would bring enough new features to be a worthy successor.

Now I have to say, Mega Crit has outdone itself!“

  • Lalune:  “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right? […] But honestly, the whole thing feels like it could have been DLC for the original.”

When is our review coming?

For such a deck-building smash hit, GlobalESportNews naturally has to assign its absolute best, smartest, and most capable strategist. But since he unfortunately didn’t have time, I had to step up!

Joking aside: I dove right into the tower last night and unlocked all the characters in my first three hours. I’ve already embedded a short gameplay video of my glorious poison build above so you can see for yourself. Of course, that’s not enough for a well-founded opinion. That’s why I’m going to lock myself in my apartment this weekend with plenty of coffee, play the game through to completion, and probably die far too often due to a stupid mistake just before the boss.

If all goes well, you’ll be able to read our detailed early access review of Slay the Spire 2 here on Monday.
