The PlayStation Portal was too small for him, so he made his PS5 portable.

The PlayStation Portal handheld streams games from the PS5 to your hand. Since November last year, you’ve also had the option of getting titles directly from the cloud.

One player on Reddit thought that wasn’t enough. He built his own portable version of the PS5 – in a suitcase.

This is in the case

In the post, the player named proxlamus mentions what is in the case.

  • A PS5 including a power supply
  • A 24-inch KTC monitor with a refresh rate of 180 Hz and 1440p resolution
  • A small $20 cooling fan

The case itself is a Pelican 1555. These hard cases are specifically designed to protect expensive and sensitive equipment.

This is how the player built his PS Portal

The player didn’t need much craftsmanship.

  • To keep the PS5 in place, the player used industrial-strength hook-and-loop fasteners. These are significantly stronger than commercial equivalents.
  • In addition, the player uses a PS5 wall mount to keep a gap between the case and the console. This serves as an air supply.

In addition, proxlamus mentions in the comments that he bought and installed a small $20 fan to keep the PS5 from overheating.

The player attached the display directly to the case lid with four screws. According to the player, he didn’t even need a bracket for this.

Could it be a made-up story?Yes, that cannot be ruled out. However, the Redditor has been active in other subreddits related to games and VR for years. There he repeatedly gives tips on the technology behind consoles, PCs and VR headsets.

Why no PS Portal?

proxlamus even admits that he owns a PlayStation Portal. However, he has two fundamental problems with Sony’s handheld.

  • The screen is too small for him personally.
  • The handheld sucks up enormous amounts of mobile data when he’s on the go.

That’s why he built his own portable version of the PS5.

The comments are enthusiastic– and have a suggestion for improvement: next time, the player should use an OLED screen.

But the player’s design does have one disadvantage. It always needs a power outlet for the console and screen. Where the PS4 portal can run on battery power for a few hours, the PS5 case needs a power supply to function.

By the way, proxlamus’ idea is not new. On Console Variations you can see a PS1 with a built-in screen that was intended for use on the go. The portable console was released towards the end of the PS1’s lifecycle in Europe; according to the source, between 5,000 and 10,000 units were produced.

The Nintendo GameCube was also given a display accessory over time that you could buy and plug directly into the console.
