At Gamescom 2025, long lines formed not only in front of monumental exhibition stands, but also at a comparatively inconspicuous booth. There, fans waited patiently to take a photo with a cardboard cutout from Love and Deepspace. The image is symbolic of the status the mobile game has achieved over the course of the year.

An otome game with unusual reach

Love and Deepspace is a narrative free-to-play game for mobile devices. It was developed by Papergames, a studio previously known primarily for the Nikki series. The title was released in January 2024 and won the award for Best Mobile Game at Gamescom in 2025.

According to published figures, the game exceeded $750 million in gross revenue from player spending within two years. At the same time, an internationally visible fan base grew.

A mixture of romance, science fiction, and action

In terms of content, the game combines several genres. The plot is set in a science fiction scenario in which the player character is part of an organization that protects the planet from alien threats. Romantic sequences, action-packed 3D battles, and smaller mini-games alternate between story sections.

Five romanticizable characters are central to the story: Xavier, Rafayel, Zayne, Sylus, and Caleb. Each of them follows a clear archetype and has their own personality. Players can spend time with individual characters without having to commit to a fixed path.

Closeness as a central game element

As a live service title, Love and Deepspace is continuously being expanded. New interaction options are part of the core concept. Menus allow players to directly address the characters, touch them, or speak to them via the microphone. This is complemented by audio content that focuses on closeness and intimacy.

These mechanics help to keep players engaged in the long term. The characters function less as classic game characters and more as permanent companions within the game.

Low barriers to entry, growing market

A key factor in its success is the low barrier to entry. All you need is a smartphone with enough storage space. At the same time, the title benefits from the growing acceptance of the gacha model in the Western market, which has been established in recent years by other mobile games.

In addition, games with a clear focus on a female audience have long been considered underserved. Love and Deepspace thus encountered an environment that was open to new formats.

Fan culture beyond the game

The popularity of the title is not only reflected in sales or download figures. Active exchanges take place on platforms such as TikTok and Bluesky.
Fans discuss characters, voiceovers, events, and particularly difficult sections of the game.
The game is often compared to the dynamics of boy band fandoms. Their shared enthusiasm is reinforced by their visibility. The game is not only consumed, but collectively experienced.
