Hitman developers reveal official co-op mode for assassin game almost as an afterthought

While all eyes are on the James Bond game, IO Interactive reveals that it is working on a co-op mode for Hitman: World of Assassination.

It wasn’t the show most viewers were expecting. IO Interactive booked its own stage and livestream on the non-E3 weekend to present the studio’s biggest innovations. Of course, everyone was particularly excited about 007: First Light, the upcoming James Bond game.

But no such luck. The first cinematic trailer had already been shown days earlier at State of Play, leaving nothing for the studio’s own show – not even a gameplay trailer. Instead, it was mentioned almost as an afterthought that Hitman: World of Assassination would be getting a co-op mode.

What exactly do we know about the co-op mode?

Information is still pretty scarce, and IOI has kept things surprisingly under wraps here as well. But one thing is clear:

  • Instead of Agent 47, we’ll be playing the assassins Stone and Knight. They have already appeared as a duo in Hitman 2: Sniper Assassin and the mobile game Hitman Sniper: The Shadows.
  • It won’t just be a stripped-down sniper mode like in Hitman 2, but will offer a full Hitman experience
  • There are tiny gameplay clips! These already show that players can dress up in their victims’ clothes to avoid attracting attention, just like in single-player mode. In addition, the camera angle of the other player can be seen in the lower left corner of the screen, so you always know what they are up to.

It also sounds like separate missions are being designed for the mode and that the existing levels won’t simply be made available for a second assassin. However, there is no clear information on this yet. You can watch a short clip from the show in the Reddit post above.

It remains to be seen when the co-op mode will be released. More information will follow soon.

Hitman fans can already tattoo the barcode on their skulls, because you can now hunt down Bond villain Le Chiffre from Casino Royale. But you only have a month, then the character played by Mads Mikkelsen will go underground again.

Incidentally, IOI didn’t save this info for their own show, but revealed it during Summer Game Fest the day before.
