Viktor Antonov, the creative mind behind the look of Half-Life 2 and Dishonored, has passed away at the age of 52.

The gaming world has lost one of its greatest artists: Viktor Antonov, the creative mind behind the look of Half-Life 2 and Dishonored, has died at the age of just 52. The news spread via social media after former Valve writer Marc Laidlaw confirmed Antonov’s death in an Instagram story. Details about the circumstances of his death are not yet known.

He played a major role in shaping the unique look of Half-Life 2 by creating the dark aesthetics of City 17. There, he combined Eastern European post-war architecture with the dark alien structures of the Combine. His designs made the world of Half-Life 2 credible, oppressive and, to this day, legendary.

After leaving Valve, Viktor Antonov joined Arkane Studios, where he once again left his mark. Dishonored’s city of Dunwall is a mixture of Victorian London, steampunk elements and Viktor Antonov’s typical preference for industrial structures of all kinds.

A career full of well-known works

Viktor Antonov was originally from Bulgaria but moved to Paris when he was 17 years old. He started his career in the gaming industry at Xatrix Entertainment (later Gray Matter), where he worked on titles such as Kingpin: Life of Crime. However, it was his later works that made him immortal. In addition to Half-Life 2 and Dishonored, he also worked on games such as:

  • Counter-Strike: Source
  • Wolfenstein: The New Order
  • Fallout 4
  • Doom (2016)
  • Prey (2017)

His colleagues remember not only his artistic influence, but also his personality. Arkane founder Raphaël Colantonio expressed his grief with the following words:

RIP, Viktor Antonov. I wish I told you how much admiration I had for you but we get caught in our lives until a surprise like this hits us. You were instrumental in Arkane Studios’ success and an inspiration to many of us. You are also a friend with whom I have many great memories.

Viktor Antonov leaves behind an impressive legacy that will shape the gaming world forever. His visionary designs helped make Half-Life 2 and Dishonored masterpieces. At 52, Viktor Antonov’s passing is far too soon. But his works will continue to accompany us every time we walk the streets of City 17 or sneak through Dunwall.
