GTA, but in the Middle Ages: Now you can get an open world with crude humor and lots of chaos for $0.

This week, Epic has a game that deliberately aims to revive the old GTAs. But in the Middle Ages.

It doesn’t always have to be a big, heavy chunk! This week, the Epic Store is offering a pretty silly open-world game for free that aims to win you over with its very… special humor. But before we dive in, here are the usual terms and conditions: The game will be available for free for one week starting now at 5 p.m. You’ll need a free Epic account, Rustler is free this week in the Epic Store

When Rustler was announced, many thought it was a joke. At the time, it was still called Grand Theft Horse, and this original name sums it up perfectly: Rustler sees itself as a parody of the classic, old GTA games from a top-down perspective. You move through an open game world as a little dude, mess with the law, and complete all kinds of kill and collection tasks, but unlike in GTA, this takes place in a medieval game world.

The game never takes itself seriously and bombards you with pop culture references. If you like this kind of humor, you’ll have a few pretty silly hours – we found the slapstick humor pretty annoying back then in the GlobalESportNews review of Rustler.

Nevertheless, if you’re in the mood for a few silly hours of gameplay chaos and miss the first two GTA games, then this is definitely for you. And it’s free.

And if you’re not into it, Steam is also offering the Middle Ages for free right now. The sandbox MMO Pax Dei is currently enjoying an extended free weekend and can be tested in its entirety until January 26, 2026. However, Pax Dei is also languishing with rather mixed Steam reviews, similar to Rustler.
