Merchandise as a spoiler? That seems to be exactly what has happened again with the second season of Amazon’s Fallout series. A T-shirt design that briefly appeared in the official Amazon store is currently causing a stir in the community.
The motif suggests that we will not only see one of the most famous battles in Fallout history, but also perhaps the worst monster in the series – at a point in time that you are unlikely to be familiar with from the games.

The monster in the snow of Alaska
The design of the shirt leaves little room for interpretation: You can see the unmistakable, menacing silhouette of a Deathclaw looming over a soldier in T-45 Power Armor. The surroundings: snow, ice, and burning trees. For Fallout aficionados, this is an almost unmistakable reference to Alaska and the famous Operation Anchorage, in which the US repelled the Chinese invaders.

In most games, you encounter the Deathclaw as a mutated beast, centuries after the war. But this image suggests a completely different scenario. It shows the monster in the middle of a military operation before the bombs fall. This confirms what was previously mainly found in text logs in the games: Deathclaws were not a random quirk of nature, but bred biological weapons.
If this T-shirt actually foreshadows a scene from season 2, it has massive implications for the story of the Ghoul, also known as Cooper Howard. We know that he fought in Alaska. A brief shot in the teaser trailer already showed him horrified in his armor.
The community is now putting two and two together: Cooper may not be looking at the Chinese onslaught at this moment, but at the work of his own commanders.
So if he witnessed the US command unleashing these monstrous creatures on the battlefield – perhaps even without regard for their own troops – that explains his deep disillusionment with Vault-Tec and the military-industrial complex even better.
While the T-shirt is considered hard evidence
by fans, further, as yet unconfirmed details are circulating in the comments sections on Reddit. One user mentions that special effects designer Cary Gunnar Lee is said to have hinted that it is a specific pre-war deathclaw with the internal name ”Clawdius.”
Whether or not the thing has a name: What is certain, however, is that the depiction of a pre-war deathclaw gives the showrunners a lot of creative freedom.
These creatures could differ visually and behaviorally from the feral descendants you know from Fallout 3, 4, or New Vegas. And they might even be more deadly, since they don’t suffer from radiation damage and are over 200 years old.
