July starts with two free games from the Epic Games Store. We’ll tell you whether you should grab them.

Update from July 10: The week is more than half over, time for the Epic alarm clock. There are still a few hours left to redeem the current free offer. This time there’s a double pack of free games that you can keep permanently. Read here to find out who is worth it.

Original message: The worst of the heat is over for now and if your CPU hasn’t melted, you can grab two free games in the Epic Games Stare this week. With Backpack Hero you get a very special deckbuilder and in Figment it goes into the human subconscious.

Backpack Hero

Genre: Roguelike deckbuilder – Developer: Jaspel – Release: November 14, 2023

In this deck builder, you don’t have cards in your hand, but items in your backpack. From over 600 items you can put together your builds from weapons, armor, shields, magic and much more.

In order for the synergy effects of individual items to work, they must also be arranged correctly in the limited slots of your backpack. You can also choose from different characters that have different bonuses.

When you are not fighting your way through the rounds of randomly generated dungeons, you can rebuild your village with the resources you gain there. This allows you to research new and better items.

On Steam the reviews are 86 percent positive, Metacritic gives an average rating of 76. The game is suitable for players who like tinkering with builds, roguelikes and also like the pixel look.

Figment

Genre: Action-Adventure – Developer:Bedtime Digital Games – Release: September 22, 2022

In Figment you enter the depths of the human mind and find a hand-painted surreal game world in which pretty much everything makes music in one form or another.

The story is dedicated to an emotional journey about human fears that haunt the mind as nightmares. With the sword you fight the manifesting creatures. For the puzzles and small puzzles you will have to use your own brain.

The Steam users award 87 percent positive reviews and on Metacritic there is an average rating of 75. Figment is for handmade art and the playful use of music. You should also be willing to deal with themes such as death and trauma.

As always, you have exactly one week, until July 10, 2025 at 5 pm, to get the game for free in the Epic Game Store. No DLCs are available for either game, but Creed Valley, the second game in the Figment series, has been available since March 9, 2023. Incidentally, this is also still available until July 10 in the Steam Summer Sale for 5 euros.
