Nintendo has unexpectedly released a free update for Donkey Kong Country Returns HD. Version 1.1.0 is now available for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 and includes new playable content, additional modes, and technical improvements.

Dixie Kong now playable

The most notable new feature is the introduction of Dixie Kong as a playable character. Players can use her in both single-player and local co-op modes. Her jumping mechanics differ from those of Diddy Kong, as she can stay in the air longer with the help of her characteristic ponytail.

In single-player mode, you can switch between Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong when picking up a barrel.
In local two-player mode, players can also freely select the character, switching between them using the stick on the world map.

New Turbo Attack Mode

The update also introduces a new Turbo Attack Mode. In this mode, familiar levels can be played at significantly increased speeds.
The Turbo Attack is unlocked once a level has been completed and appears alongside the familiar Time Attack.
Players who complete a course within the specified time limit receive a Turbo Medal. No further adjustments to the game structure or existing levels have been announced.

Language options and general improvements

Version 1.1.0 also adds new language support to Donkey Kong Country Returns HD. Brazilian Portuguese is now available and can be activated via the language settings in the system menu.

In addition, several minor issues have been fixed. Nintendo also mentions general improvements to image quality, which are intended to optimize the overall gaming experience. Specific details about individual bug fixes have not been released.

Exclusive benefits on Nintendo Switch 2

Players on the Nintendo Switch 2 benefit from additional, exclusive customizations. The update adds support for GameShare in local multiplayer. The feature can be activated directly in the start menu or via the world map.

In addition, the game has been optimized for the Nintendo Switch 2 display and high-definition televisions. Nintendo mentions improved image quality without specifying concrete resolution values. Shorter loading times on the new hardware have also been confirmed.

Free update with no restrictions

The update is free and available to all owners of Donkey Kong Country Returns HD on both platforms. Content is not subject to any additional conditions or progress requirements, apart from the one-time unlocking of Turbo Attack mode by completing a level.

Nintendo has not provided any information on whether further major updates are planned.
