Darksiders: Genesis is a must-have title, especially for co-op fans, and should end up under your Christmas tree in the current sale. Why? Let me explain!
Once again, I want to fly the Darksiders flag. Launched in 2010, the game series has produced a total of four games to date, tortures my fan heart with a really nasty cutscene, and yet is still somehow considered a niche product. I’ll say it again today: unjustly so!
The current Steam Winter Sale provides excellent proof of my claim. For just seven euros, Darksiders: Genesis is a first-class action-adventure game that will ignite your love for the franchise.
And best of all: you can also experience the spectacle in co-op with a friend.
Insane, why are you sending me to hell?
There are several good reasons why you shouldn’t miss out on the current offer on Steam:
- Ideal introduction: Although Darksiders: Genesis is the fourth game in the series, it takes place at the very beginning of the story surrounding hell, heaven, and the apocalypse. It is a prequel to Part 1 and therefore the best introduction for new fans.
- Cool characters: In Genesis, you control either War or Strife, two of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse. While War chops the monsters of Hell into mincemeat with his huge sword in true hack-and-slash style, Strife shoots from a distance with his two pistols. The playing styles differ greatly from each other, which increases the replay value.
- Fantastic gameplay: The beautiful levels are full of secrets, upgrade materials, and tons of monsters. Similar to Diablo, you run through often dark areas in an isometric camera view, where you fight almost non-stop. In addition to your main weapons, you can also draw on a variety of skills.
- Bloody spectacle: The parallels to Diablo are clearly visible, now we come to the God of War reference. War and Strife like to dispose of their opponents via
executions
. And these stylishly choreographed finishing moves would even elicit an appreciative grunt from Kratos. Not for the faint of heart!
- Co-op blast: The best news comes last. You can easily play Genesis on your own (the companion AI works great), but you can also play with a friend. Who knows, maybe you’ll both become Darksiders fans?

If you give my Steam recommendation a try and then want to catch up on the entire Darksiders series, you should check back on Steam. The three numbered main games are also heavily discounted in the Winter Sale. Darksiders 4 has already been announced, but it won’t be released until 2027, so you have more than enough time to catch up on one of my favorite game series. Have fun!
