2025 is the year of Japan-themed games. After Assassin’s Creed Shadows sent us into the raging civil war of the Sengoku era in March, Ghost of Yotei takes us to Japan’s northernmost main island, Hokkaido, in early October.
On Ezo, as Hokkaido was called back then, we slip into the role of the ruthless ronin Atsu, who is searching for the murderers of his family. What awaits us is a classic revenge story. Accordingly, Atsu is equipped with a wide range of sharp tools to dispatch his enemies as quickly and painfully as possible.
In the latest video, the developers introduce the Kusarigama, a type of chain sickle that can be used to fight both at a distance and at close range. The bloody nature of the battles in Yotei is striking. Of course, katanas were sharp in ancient Japan, but it seems as if the brutality in Yotei has been ramped up even further compared to Tsushima.
Ghost of Yotei will be released on October 2, initially exclusively for PlayStation 5. A PC version has not yet been confirmed, but is expected to follow at a later date.
