Now is the best time to try out Age of Empires 4 on Steam: You can still play the strategy hit for free for a few more days.
Age of Empires celebrates its 25th birthday this year, on 17 October 2022 to be precise. For this special occasion, Microsoft and developer studio Relic Entertainment have come up with a few surprises for you.
The first one is already available: You can play Age of Empires 4 completely free of charge on Steam right now – and if you like it, you can buy it cheaper than ever before.

While the latest instalment of the time-honoured strategy series has struggled with a few problems and never quite managed to generate the enthusiasm that the second part did.
At the moment you can just make up your own mind whether Age of Empires 4 might be worth your time and money. On Steam, AoE 4 is completely free to play until Monday, 29 August 2022.
Simply visit the Steam shop page of Age of Empires 4 and click the new Add to Library button – then you can install the game at any time via the Steam client.
If you like Age of Empires 4, you can get the game at the new lowest price: For the first time, the title is reduced by 50 percent and currently costs 25 Euros – that’s another 20 Euros less than during the Steam Summer Sale.
Anniversary Update will be released in October
You’ll get the second gift for the big anniversary in the form of the free Anniversary Update, which was announced at gamescom 2022:
This one includes two new civilisations, the Malians and the Ottomans: The Malians are an economic heavyweight and one of the richest trading nations in the game, while the Ottoman Empire has powerful cavalry and the largest available gunpowder siege weapon in the entire game.
In addition, several new maps, achievements and in-game events are part of the Anniversary Update, which will be released completely free of charge to all Age of Empires 4 owners on 25 October 2022.
