Finally, there’s fresh information on Kenshi 2! What awaits you in the huge sandbox world, and when can you start your adventure?
Kenshi is a merciless open-world role-playing game that throws you into a fascinating and brutal post-apocalyptic world and gives you complete freedom – and for the author of this article, it’s the best sandbox game to date alongside Mount & Blade: Warband and Star Sector.
And although the sequel, Kenshi 2, was announced what feels like an eternity ago, concrete information has been scarce for a long time.
But after years of waiting, there is finally an update directly from the developers that reveals more about what you can expect from your next trip to this unique sandbox.
What is behind the Kenshi 2 myth?
Anyone who knows Kenshi knows that open world really is a big deal here. No quest markers, no hand-holding tutorials, just pure freedom and a merciless survival atmosphere. And that remains the guiding principle for Kenshi 2.
Kenshi 2 not only wants to continue all of this, but also take it to a new level – with an exciting journey through time: The story takes place 1,000 years before the first part. So you’ll experience a world that is still under construction, with different factions, technologies, and social structures. The game world is also supposed to be 50 percent larger
The engine change could also be a real game changer for Kenshi 2. Instead of the old Ogre engine, Unreal Engine 5 is now being used. This not only brings sleeker graphics, but also new technical possibilities.
Thanks to features such as World Partition, Nanite, and Lumen, you can expect larger, more detailed landscapes, dynamic lighting, and…significantly better performance– a massive problem in the predecessor, even on high-end computers.
The developers say that working with the new engine is also much easier and faster, which will greatly benefit modders.
When will Kenshi 2 be released?
Lo-Fi Games has now grown to 33 employees – a quantum leap considering that Chris Hunt developed the first part almost single-handedly.
Even though we finally have some new information, Lo-Fi Games still hasn’t given us a concrete release date. The community expects a release in late 2025 or 2026 at the earliest, as the team doesn’t want to release the game until it’s really finished; there are no plans for an early access phase this time around.
At least the fact that translators for various languages are now on board suggests that Kenshi 2 is now in an advanced stage of development after years of silence.
