The OneXSugar 1 has movable controllers and screens.
One-Netbook has announced a new gaming handheld that uses movable screens and controllers to enable different ways of playing. Although I’ve tested and tried many different gaming handhelds, I’ve never seen anything like it.
OneXSugar 1: The handheld is definitely not boring
More and more gaming handhelds are appearing and, as with smartphones, a special design direction is slowly but surely establishing itself that is being adopted by all manufacturers. However, the OneXSugar 1 proves to me that there is still plenty of room for experimentation in this device category.
The OneXSugar 1 in detail: The OneXSugar 1 is basically an Android gaming handheld that is suitable for game streaming, cloud gaming and Android games. Its biggest unique selling point is the different options for positioning the controller and the two OLED screens.
There are four different modes in total:
- “Single Screen A”: A horizontal handheld in the style of the Nintendo Switch.
- “Single Screen B”: The controls are located under the display, simulating a vertical handheld like the Game Boy.
- “Dual Screen A”: This mode is similar to the layout of the Nintendo DS.
- “Dual Screen B”: A horizontal handheld with an additional screen above the main screen.
The two displays are equipped with impressive technical specifications:
Thanks to the fast Qualcomm Snapdragon G3 Gen3, gaming performance should also be at a high level. Coupled with the large 5,600 mAh battery, the battery life shouldn’t be bad either.
The remaining technical data:
- CPU: Snapdragon G3 Gen3
- GPU: Adreno A32
- Memory configuration: 16 / 512 GByte
- Memory type: UFS 4.0
- Battery:5,600 mAh
- Controller: Trigger and bumper with microswitch, Hall effect sticks, 3-axis gyroscope
- Connectivity: WiFi 7, Bluetooth 5.3
- Ports: USB-C, microSD
- Operating system: Android 14
- Weight: 486.3 grams
But I still have two concerns: With all the moving parts, I wonder how robust and durable this handheld will be. There are definitely more potential sources of mechanical failures.
Also, I applaud the high-end hardware that One-Netbook has installed here, but at the same time, I wonder if an Android handheld really needed all this? The OLED screens, fast processor, fast memory, large battery and still the exceptional design drive the price into a range where the handheld competes with models you can play PC games with.
Price and availability: The One X Sugar 1 will initially be offered via a crowdfunding campaign – and is not exactly cheap.
Early supporters will have three days from July 21 to get it for 70 US dollars off:
- 600 US dollars for early backers
- 670 US dollars regular
