“Pay more for the PS5” – why Sony is raising prices

Surprise for US gamers: Since August 21, 2025, buyers will have to dig deeper into their pockets if they want to get their hands on a PlayStation 5.nbsp;Sony has officially confirmed that all versions of the console – from the standard edition to the Pro – will increase in price. The increase is significant at $50 per model, meaning that the standard version will now cost $549.99 instead of the previous $499.99. The Digital Edition will also increase from $449.99 to $499.99, while the more powerful Pro version will now cost $749.99.

Sony cites the continuing challenging economic environment as the reason for its decision. An official statement reads: “Like many global companies, we continue to operate in a challenging economic environment. For this reason, we have made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price of PlayStation 5 consoles in the US starting August 21.”

This now also affects the US market, which had previously been spared from global price increases. Sony raised the price of the console in Europe and other regions last year, while gamers in North America were still able to pay the old price.

Competition in sight: What the price wave means for gamers

The renewed price increase comes at a time when other manufacturers are also raising their prices. In August, Nintendo increased the cost of its Switch models in the US by between $30 and $50, depending on the model. For consumers, this means a noticeable additional burden, especially in a market that is already characterized by rising costs in many areas.

It remains to be seen whether this development will slow demand in the long term. Despite higher prices, the PlayStation 5 remains one of the most sought-after devices of its generation. In particular, the exclusive game library and the introduction of the Pro model could ensure that fans continue to snap it up.

There are currently no indications of a new round of price increases in Europe. However, Sony’s communication on such issues is considered short-term, so gamers in this country are keeping a close eye on the news. One thing is certain: anyone hoping for a bargain is likely to be disappointed in the near future.
