Battlefield 6 has unveiled its campaign for the first time, two weeks before launch. While the trailer has received a lot of positive feedback, the actual gameplay has fans wondering.

On October 10, the Battlefield series will make a real comeback after a long hiatus with Battlefield 6 – at least, that’s what many signs currently indicate. Both the previous announcements about the various multiplayer modes and the two open beta weekends were very well received by shooter fans.

Now EA has unveiled the first material from the story campaign, and fan reactions are divided. Because although the comments  under the action-packed YouTube trailer are overwhelmingly positive (60,000 likes to 850 dislikes) and the game is already being hailed as a winner over its genre competitor Black Ops 7, the opinions under the real gameplay videos are more critical.

At the same time as the trailer was released, numerous media outlets and influencers were also allowed to publish their first impressions of the single-player mode.

Although Battlefield 6 returns to a tightly woven campaign after the War Stories of its predecessors, you have to be always online and – at least for now – contend with wooden NPC faces and rather dumb AI.

And that’s what much of the criticism boiling over in the Battlefield subreddit is aimed at. The trigger is a video clip from the YouTube channel  BigfryTV. In it, the creator shows that the team AI apparently has great difficulty keeping up with your character.

If you run too fast, the AI squad will simply stand still and stare blankly into space until you return to them. If you don’t take the team with you, you will probably not be able to progress very far in the levels.

In some cases, however, your teammates will spot enemy soldiers through walls and start targeting them even though they are not yet visible. The creator of the corresponding Reddit post writes: “It still looks very rough. We’ve included the thread above.”

NPCs like in Bethesda?

Another user writes there: I can’t believe that in 2025 we’ll still have NPCs blocking level progression.  And a third user comments: Because of things like this, I’ve made it a rule to always stay a few meters behind the NPC who is leading me somewhere. Thanks, Bethesda!

Good AI has never been one of the strengths of the Battlefield series, but fans are also likely to be concerned about the circumstances surrounding the creation of the single-player campaign.

In March 2024, it was announced that the head of Ridgeline, the studio responsible for the campaign, had left the team during development, presumably due to creative differences with EA management. Ridgeline was shut down and the campaign was handed over to Criterion.

The campaign seems to have been completely revamped since then, which would explain the unfinished look of many systems. Of course, this cannot be proven conclusively, but the fact that, according to insiders, the campaign was the last element of Battlefield 6 to reach final alpha status speaks volumes.
