The biggest update yet for the underwater adventure is on the way, bringing a new, dark region full of story elements.
Subnautica 2 has been playable since May. Now the journey is moving step by step toward Early Access 2.0—or should I have called it a “fin stroke” instead? That fits the theme better. In any case, the biggest update since the initial release is now waiting for all underwater fans.
Subnautica 2 Gets a Major Spooky Update
Creative Director Anthony Gallegos explains in a new video that this update heralds the transition to Early Access 2.0.
“‘EA 2,’ as we call it, is an update that not only adds a completely new, playable area with multiple biomes, but also numerous new story elements,” he explains.
Just in time for October, the official month of spookiness, this patch brings what is arguably the “most eerie region.” Gallegos describes this region as dark, menacing—yet somehow simply beautiful. That’s a wonderful description, because it often applies to areas in video games. Remnant, the Souls games…
There’s this oppressive, melancholic beauty everywhere. Maybe because it feels so mysterious? Maybe because this dark aesthetic just really hits the spot for me—and for many others?
But exploring the deep, dark parts of the ocean and discovering its strange, dangerous inhabitants sounds really exciting—and also a little creepy. A loud rumbling coming from the depths of the darkness, and you don’t yet know if it’s coming from below, from behind, or even from ahead.
Most recently, the team added proximity chat and a new revival system to Subnautica 2.
At the time of writing, fans on Steam are pretty satisfied with Unknown Worlds’ still-unfinished game. The game currently holds an 81 percent positive rating there.
In our review of the Early Access version, Ahmet gives it a positive verdict. He describes it as a very familiar world.
“Beauty, solitude, the thrill of discovery, and a subtle sense of danger are once again tightly intertwined, while the optional co-op mode promises an exciting team experience in the long run,” he writes. At the same time, however, the game still lacks content, a story, and some polish.
There is no set date yet for the final 1.0 release.
