The next Stronghold will be released in an initial version as early as December, but the demo will be spruced up a bit before then.

People are coming to the castle! And they’ll be here by December 7, 2026, at the latest. The castle will still be under construction then, but what castle is ever really finished? In this case, of course, “castle” refers to Stronghold 4, whose Early Access release was recently made official.

The real-time strategy or city-building game (depending on who you ask) continues the time-honored castle-building series and, after a few rather mixed games (excluding the remasters of the originals), is finally set to regain its former glory.

To that end, the studio Firefly is returning to its original strengths and picking up exactly where the series first began.

What to Expect in Early Access

Stronghold 4 is reportedly being developed in closer collaboration with the community than any previous Stronghold title. That’s why the team is opening the castle gates much earlier than would normally be the case. After all, Stronghold 4 was only officially unveiled a few months ago.

The Early Access version does not yet include all the modes and features planned for the final release. While you can already play through the 22 missions of the new prequel campaign, engage in skirmishes, and build freely, you’ll still have to do without multiplayer, co-op skirmishes, and an economic campaign. All of that will come later.

Of course, the developers will also be gathering feedback from fans throughout Early Access and will revise certain features. This means balance changes or even new quality-of-life features may follow. More bugs are also to be expected during Early Access.

As things stand now, you won’t have to wait very long for the full release after Early Access begins. The developers expect to release version 1.0 just six months later. That would be in June 2027.

Your Biggest Stronghold Castle

In addition to the announcement of the Early Access release, new content was also announced for the free demo already available on Steam. Starting now, you can try out the Free Build game mode there and access the largest map ever featured in a Stronghold game. This means you can also build what is likely the largest castle the series has ever seen.

According to the developers, while this map is the largest Stronghold map to date, it’s not the largest map in Stronghold 4. In the full game, you’ll have even more space to build the castle of your dreams.

But if you’d rather engage in competitive battles, starting October 19, you can dive into Skirmish mode, which will be added to the demo for Steam Next Fest. However, this mode is limited to PvE matches against AI opponents.
