The movement is teaming up with Dutch consumer advocates to challenge the PlayStation monopoly and fight against high digital prices.

The “Stop Killing Games” movement is now officially suing Sony. The company is accused of violating the law with its “monopoly” on the video game market.

Sony recently came under pressure after the company announced it would stop producing PlayStation discs starting in early 2028. Lawsuits have already been filed against the console manufacturer in several countries as a result, reigniting the debate over the ownership of physical media.

Alliance with Dutch consumer advocates over excessive prices

This week, Stop Killing Games released aYouTube videoin which it announced that it is joining forces with the Dutch consumer organization Stichting Massaschade & Consument (SM&C). The organization had already filed a lawsuit against Sony in February seeking $457 million. The allegation: Sony is artificially inflating prices on the PlayStation Store for users in the Netherlands.

The increased costs for digital games are referred to as an unlawful “Sony tax,” which is why the initiative advocates for fair prices and alternatives to the PlayStation Store. At the same time, it is seeking a refund of the money that Sony allegedly earned from Dutch players through its digital platform. According to SM&C, this amount totals hundreds of millions of euros.

International Legal Proceedings and Sony’s Stance on Disc Discontinuation

In Mexico, for example, an antitrust lawsuit is being pursued, while a class-action lawsuit is also underway in the United Kingdom, accusing the company of enriching itself at the expense of millions of users in the country through “excessive and unfair” fees on the PlayStation Store.

Despite the headwinds, however, Sony shows no signs of backing down from its decision. It seems as though the company intends to weather this storm.
