Aegon’s conquest could be brought to the big screen in the grand style of Dune. Beau Willimon, one of the writers of Andor, is now working on it.
Aegon I subjugated the Seven Kingdoms with two sister-wives and three dragons and forged the Iron Throne from the swords of his adversaries.
And we may even see the most epic campaign in the history of Game of Thrones in the cinema and not just on HBO Max! Warner Bros. has now hired writer Beau Willimon to write the screenplay.
Conquer Westeros in the cinema?
Star Wars fans should prick up their ears now. After all, Willimon was instrumental in Tony Gilroy’s Andor, the second and final season of which was released just last year. Willimon is also known for his work on the award-winning Netflix series House of Cards.
It comes as no surprise that Warner Bros. and HBO want to bring Game of Thrones to the big screen. As early as the beginning of 2026, it was announced that Aegon’s conquest had potential for the big screen. Specifically, there was talk of a monumental feature film on the scale of Dune
.
However, there is no guarantee that this plan will actually work out. This is because the film and TV departments at Warner Bros. and HBO are competing with each other over the film adaptation of Aegon’s Conquest: While Beau Willimon is working on a film script, Mattson Tomlin (The Batman, Terminator: Zero) is writing scripts for a series adaptation.
According to current reports, both projects are being pursued in parallel, and it remains to be seen which one will win the race. Please note: It is currently unknown how the possible takeover of Warner Bros. (and thus HBO) by Paramount will affect the Game of Thrones brand and the current plans for it.
Aegon’s conquest MUST be staged in an epic manner
What is Aegon’s conquest all about? Most of the information on this can be found in George R.R. Martin’s fictional historical novel on the history of the Targaryens, Fire and Blood
: Aegon I, along with his two sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys, crossed over to Westeros on the backs of the dragons Balerion, Vhagar, and Meraxes to subjugate the Seven Kingdoms with—well—fire and blood.
Countless brutal battles were fought, in which entire armies of Aegon’s comrades-in-arms and dragons were wiped out. Therefore, it would make perfect sense to stage this fiery spectacle on the big screen rather than on the small screen.
It remains to be seen when we will get to see Aegon’s conquest as a movie or TV series. Since the project is in a very early stage of development, you definitely shouldn’t expect it before 2028. It will likely be even later than that.
By the way: Season 1 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has just ended, but Season 2 of the series about Dunk (Peter Claffey) and Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell) is set to continue in 2027. Meanwhile, the third season of House of the Dragon is in the starting blocks for June 2026.
