First-person or third-person perspective
Unlike in Resident Evil: Village, you don’t have to pay extra for the third-person view. Both first-person and third-person perspectives are built into Requiem. You can easily change the view at any time in the menu. The first-person perspective is recommended, but according to initial previews, the third-person mode also works great. Incidentally, unlike in parts 7 and 8, the cutscenes are not from a first-person perspective.
Characters: Who do we play in Requiem?
In part 9 of the main series, we slip into the role of Grace Ashcroft, a criminal analyst with the FBI. Fans of the series may remember her mother, Alyssa Ashcroft: the reporter was one of eight playable characters in the 2004 (co-op) spin-off Resident Evil Outbreak. Grace is said to differ from other main characters in the series due to her distinctly introverted nature.
Initial previews report sections in which Grace is unarmed and only has tools and items with her to solve puzzles. However, there will also be passages in which you can defend yourself with firearms.
You will also be playing as the series favorite Leon S. Kennedy, whom you last controlled in the remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 4. The former police officer may be getting on in years, but he still takes on the brutal action part of the game, contrasting with Grace.
Horror, action, or both?
With its ninth installment, Resident Evil returns to its single-player horror roots—fear is declared a core element of the game. The basic idea is a so-called
(in English: addictive fear), in which you are driven by the relieving feeling of overcoming your own fears. However, this is only part of the game.Addicting Fear
The other half focuses on brutal action, as you know from part 4, for example. In these passages, you will mainly control Leon, who has lost all fear through his experiences.
Plot and setting: Back to Raccoon City
In Requiem, we will presumably return to the legendary city that was once the headquarters of the pharmaceutical giant Umbrella and where it all began: After Raccoon City was overrun by zombies and bombed by the government in 1998, the ghost town stands empty.
Decades later, Grace Ashcroft returns to investigate her mother’s death in an abandoned hotel. Not much else is known about the plot at this point.
Leon is now a DSO agent and fights bioterrorism full-time. In Requiem, he must investigate deaths in the Midwestern United States. This leads him on the trail of former Umbrella researcher Victor Gideon.
The announcement trailer also shows the RPD police station, which we already know from part 2 of the series. Initial previews also report a kind of hospital where Grace awakens. This section is strongly reminiscent of the Beneviento house from Resi 8, as Grace is also pursued by a large creature that she cannot defend herself against (Mr. X and Lady Dimitrescu send their regards).
