Mewgenics is already a huge success just a few hours after its release. The developers reveal an impressive detail to back this up.

Quiz question: Which game is called Mewgenics, was released on February 10, 2026, and recouped the entire cost of its seven-year development period after just three hours?

Okay, it’s a tough one, so here’s the answer: Mewgenics!

Well, let’s take a closer look at the numbers and the enthusiastic comments from Steam users. And if you haven’t read our review yet, you should do so as soon as possible!

The numbers

In terms of numbers, Mewgenics’ current success looks like this: Up to 65,962 cat fans were playing the game simultaneously in the first 24 hours. At the time of writing, there are still an impressive 38,623 (source: SteamDB).

We don’t have exact sales figures, but they are definitely not low. As indie developer Tyler Glaiel (The End Is Nigh, Bombernauts) proudly announced on X, Mewgenics is already profitable – not a given after such a long development period without a publisher behind it.

The emotions

Even more impressive than the bare figures are the voices of Steam users. A whopping 96 percent of the more than 4,000 reviews are positive. This culminates in an overall rating that is rare on Steam: Extremely positive.

This makes it all the more interesting to hear from some of the enthusiastic users themselves:

  • This is, no joke, the most profound tactical role-playing game ever, wrapped up in poop jokes and lots of cats.  (Source)
  • It’s Final Fantasy Tactics mixed with Magic: The Gathering-style combo building, with the best music to be found in a game in a long time… and cats mating. And poop. So much poop! (Source)
  • I happened to create a family tree that forms a circle. This game showed me why genetic diversity is so important. 10/10 (Source)
  • I went into an alley and ate the fetus. All the cats were healed. Peak gameplay!

But there is also criticism, and we want to give that a voice too.

  • The game is okay, but it lacks many of the things that make this genre so entertaining. Anyone familiar with Final Fantasy Tactics or Tactics Ogre won’t enjoy it nearly as much, and everyone else will find that a lot of things are just strange and missing.” (Source)
  • I had some problems with game crashes, which meant I had to restart every single battle. The strobe lights and flickering also bothered me. It makes playing frustrating.  (Source)
  • I don’t want to watch my cats have sex and give birth every night. It’s neither funny nor amusing. The comedy in The Binding Of Isaac handled a sensitive topic much better. Mewgenics just has a very unpleasant vibe, so you don’t feel like the dark humor is actually funny. (Source)

And what do you say?

As always with such Steam hits, it remains to be seen how the game will perform over the coming months. Mewgenics is already a resounding success, but its numerous fans would love to see the next updates deliver a few more bonus features. What do you think of Mewgenics? Feel free to cast your vote in the poll above!
