“I feel it in my soul” – A single screenshot sums up Diablo 4’s biggest problem

Too much of a good thing can also be bad: A recent Reddit thread impressively shows why Diablo 4’s current loot system frustrates many veterans.

Anyone who has reached the endgame in Diablo 4 is probably familiar with this scene: you defeat one of the final bosses, such as Duriel or Andariel, the boss falls, and the screen literally explodes in a fireworks display of colorful loot.

What provides dopamine rushes in the first few hours of gameplay increasingly becomes a tedious chore for many long-term players. A screenshot currently causing heated discussions on Reddit shows a floor that is barely visible due to all the “unique” items.

But instead of joy, this image triggers one thing above all else in the community: exhaustion and an urgent desire for better quality-of-life features.

Not a show off…this is all HOT GARBAGE

When uniques become mass-produced

Reddit user “owa1313” shared a screenshot showing the ground after several boss rotations. The entire screen is littered with red-orange rays that are supposed to mark rare, unique items. The creator’s cynical comment on this:

“I’m extremely bored, homies. The loot system is broken. I only got one two-star item in all of this.”

The image perfectly visualizes the dilemma of the current “Loot Reborn” state: Although Blizzard has fundamentally revised and improved itemization in Season 4, the problem shifts in the absolute endgame – especially on Torment 4 difficulty.

Legendary and unique items now drop so frequently that they have lost their special status. For players who want to perfect their equipment, almost only items with so-called “major affixes” count.

These are marked with a star in the game. Everything else, which is the overwhelming majority of the loot in the screenshot, is basically just material for the blacksmith.

Reddit user “PikkinPawketts” writes:

“I feel this deep in my soul. I don’t mind working for my stuff, but I do mind working for junk.”

The problem with inventory Tetris

The community’s criticism is directed less at the drop rates of the top items themselves and more at the time wasted dealing with the mass of useless loot.  Those who want to farm bosses efficiently often spend more time teleporting to the village, emptying their inventory, and scrapping items than they do actually fighting.

The situation seems particularly absurd because the drops shown are “uniques” – items that were real rarities in earlier Diablo games such as Diablo 2. In Diablo 4, however, they are so ubiquitous that they are often not even picked up unless they display the distinctive glow of a Greater Affix.

One small feature would make D4 so much better

The discussion below the image inevitably leads to calls for features that have long been standard in competing titles such as Last Epoch or Path of Exile: a configurable loot filter.

Players want to be able to hide items that are irrelevant to their build or progress. An even better solution, which receives a lot of support in the comments, is an “auto-salvage” feature.

A setting in the menu could ensure that items below a certain quality level (e.g., all Legendaries and Uniques without Greater Affixes) are automatically converted into crafting materials when picked up. After all, this is already possible with blue and yellow items. Fortunately, Blizzard seems to have finally heard the community’s prayers and criticism from threads like this one. A loot filter has been confirmed for the upcoming Lord of Hatred expansion – although we don’t yet know whether it will only hide unwanted items or directly dismantle them.

Until the add-on is released, however, you’ll have to be patient and visit your trusted blacksmith a few more times, for better or worse.
