On January 12, 2026, Anthem was finally shut down. But was it really goodbye forever for the remaining fans? A video is now sowing doubt – and raising hope.
Six years and eleven months ago, Anthem was released—and it was a huge disappointment. Fans were used to great role-playing games from Bioware, but the loot shooter experiment fell far short of the developer’s high story standards and also had to contend with numerous bugs and other weaknesses.
After an extensive rework was discontinued in 2021 and the game received no further updates, it disappeared from the interface but remained playable. It wasn’t until January 12, 2026, that the servers were shut down, bringing the story of Anthem to an end. Or did it?
A new hope
Just five days after the shutdown, a video appeared on YouTube showing someone playing Anthem in co-op mode – without any official servers. So apparently, someone has already found a way to make Anthem playable again:
The five-minute clip from the YouTube channel And799 has only garnered 5,000 views so far, but it’s raising hopes among fans:
Bro, please keep going, we’re all pinning our hopes on you.
I hope it will be possible to bring the game back for fans one day. I would even play that awful story again. I really appreciate what you’re doing.
Is there anything we can do to help?
At least some fans would apparently love to see Anthem return, despite all the shooter’s weaknesses. However, you shouldn’t get your hopes up too much based on the video. Because in the description, its creator explains:
This is just a feasibility test as part of my research and experimentation and does not reflect the progress of the private server/revival project that is currently in development.
The gameplay shown in the video is therefore only a test. However, And799 also mentions a private server project that is allegedly currently in the works. So it’s possible that fans are planning a return of Anthem on a larger scale after all. However, nothing more is known about this mysterious project at this time.
A few months ago, developer Mark Darrah explained in a video exactly what went wrong with Anthem’s development that led to this situation. According to him, the developers suffered from a lack of personnel, among other things, and the project lacked a concrete creative vision. You can read more about this in the article linked above.
