Amazon has found its god of war for the series: Ryan Hurst will be the new Kratos!
The Greek demigod Kratos is one of the most iconic video game characters to emerge in the early 2000s. His biggest adventure to date was released in 2022 with God of War Ragnarök.
However, we will soon be able to see Kratos and his Chaos Blades on our TVs in a different form – as a live-action series on Amazon Prime. Now, the creators have finally cast the most important role.
This is the new Kratos
Ryan Hurst becomes the grumpy god! The Sons of Anarchy star is already very familiar with the universe. In Ragnarök, he played the god of thunder Thor and was even nominated for a BAFTA award for his performance (via Deadline).
The 49-year-old American actor played Whisperer Beta in The Walking Dead from 2018 to 2019. In the drama series Sons of Anarchy, he played the fan-favorite role of Opie Winston from 2008 to 2012.

Ronald D. Moore serves as writer, showrunner, and executive producer. In the past, he has been primarily involved in various Star Trek projects such as Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Generations, and Star Trek: First Contact.
Previously, the series was to be produced by Mark Fergus (The Expanse), Hawk Ostby (also The Expanse), and Rafe Judkins (The Wheel of Time).
However, in October 2024, it was announced that the three were no longer available for the project.
What is the series about?
The live-action adaptation is based on the 2018 video game God of War. In it, Kratos and his son Atreus embark on a long journey to scatter the ashes of his mother Faye on the highest peak of Jötunheim. While Kratos wants to teach his son to be a better god, Atreus struggles with his father’s gruff manner.
The role of Atreus has not yet been cast by Amazon, and the rest of the cast is also still unknown. Pre-production is already underway in Vancouver, and Amazon has ordered two seasons outright.
However, we can’t expect a release until 2027 at the earliest, if not 2028. So we still have some time to play God of War again.
The main developer of the God of War series is Santa Monica Studio, which has produced most of the major titles such as God of War (2005), God of War 2 and 3, as well as the reboot God of War (2018) and Ragnarök.
