Timothy Cain is responsible for several role-playing games that have had a lasting impact on the entire genre and its players. Now he’s back from “semi-retirement.”

If the video game industry has anything resembling stars and celebrities, then Tim Cain is definitely one of them. After all, he is the creator of the first Fallout game and is jointly responsible for Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines, The Outer Worlds, and other blockbuster games.

After all these successes, however, Cain largely withdrew from the gaming business two years ago. As a contractor, he still worked for three studios from his home office from time to time, as well as maintaining his YouTube channel about game development. Or, in his own words: He was already  in semi-retirement.

That has now changed unexpectedly! Cain is back in the game business full-time – and not just anywhere, but at Obsidian Entertainment, as he  explains in a new video.

A role-playing legend at the legendary role-playing studio

Obsidian is certainly a familiar name to Fallout fans. After all, the studio was responsible for New Vegas! Cain is sure to know many of the team very well, having worked there on Pillars of Eternity, among other things. Obsidian was also one of his clients as a freelancer.

Cain isn’t revealing what he’s working on yet. Don’t even try to guess. You won’t guess it anyway, according to the game developer. So it’s unlikely to be a continuation of a well-known brand like The Outer Worlds; a new IP is much more likely.

Furthermore, it will apparently be quite a while before the mysterious game is released. After all, he has only been back at Obsidian for a little over a week. And I already have four new shirts!, says Cain amused.

However, Tim Cain intends to continue maintaining his YouTube channel, as many of his colleagues are fans of the videos. So there will be more anecdotes from the past, his opinions on various design decisions, and other game-related content.
