We have good news and bad news for you if you’ve been waiting for the fan remake of Oblivion.

Fans of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion have been waiting seven long years for the release of Skyblivion. The ambitious fan mod aims to recreate the world of Cyrodiil with the prettier graphics of its successor, The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim.

It was supposed to be ready in 2025. But now, just a few weeks before the end of the year, it’s been officially confirmed: We’ll have to wait until 2026 after all. But there is some consolation.

What still needs to be done before release?

In a new video announcing the delay, the Skyblivion team also comments on the remaining tasks that need to be completed before the mod is released.

  • Open World: The entire outside world of the empire has now been completed. This is where the aforementioned consolation prize comes into play, because you can now already  view the complete interactive world map of Skyblivion online.
  • Dungeons: All dungeons that you visit as part of main or side quests are fully built. Some random caves and ruins that you may encounter still need to be completed.
  • Interior areas: Most of this area is also complete, but the Imperial City is still missing some important 3D assets to complete the interiors there.
  • Where is more work needed? Quests, pathfinding, user interface, mechanics such as alchemy and magic, and final quality assurance.

What comes after the release?

Although the main work on the mod is not yet complete, the Skyblivion team is already talking about post-release content in the video above. The following is planned:

  • Creating your own spells
  • New user interface design
  • Dynamic dungeons
  • The ability to loot graves
  • More creature variety
  • More items, spells, and more

How is the community reacting?

Normally, development teams get a lot of anger and frustration from the waiting community when a release delay is announced.

In the case of Skyblivion, however, a glance at the YouTube comments shows that the majority of fans are responding with understanding:

  • You can’t force greatness. Take all the time you need.
  • Take all the time you need, no one is rushing you.
  • No one wants a rushed game, take your time.
  • Quality over crunch! You’re doing great. Don’t overexert yourselves now. Finish it, even if it takes more time.

Who will finish first? Skyblivion or The Elder Scrolls 6? It remains exciting! Speaking of TES6: There is still nothing concrete to report on the subject!

Are you still interested in Skyblivion, or has the fan mod been in development for so long that you are gradually losing interest in it? Feel free to write your opinion on the subject in the comments!
