Saving the world with Godzilla, Hatsune Miku, the KPop Demon Hunters, and a giant Homer Simpson in his underwear? Only Fortnite can deliver that right now.
You know those unique video game moments that give you goosebumps all over your body and put a big smile on your face? That’s what Fortnite did for me this weekend.
And yes, I’m talking about Battle Royale, which my age group (and beyond) likes to dismiss as the game for TikTok kids
and which doesn’t necessarily generate a lot of interest among GlobalESportNews readers. (There’s a good reason why we don’t cover this topic as extensively and consistently as many other video games.)
But now something has happened in Fortnite that even elicited an astonished “Holy!” from my esteemed colleague Peter in the editorial chat. And I don’t mean that disrespectfully – quite the contrary. Peter simply has very different (and very discerning) gaming tastes, which leave little time and space for free-to-play battle royale games with a live service model.
So what has earned the attention of the busy Peter Bathge? Take a look for yourself at what happened in the last Fortnite event in the video above.
Wait a minute, Fortnite has a story?
But let me start from the beginning. Fortnite started out as a modest co-op/survival shooter with base-building mechanics, but those days are long gone.
Nowadays, Fortnite is mainly played in Battle Royale mode, which is brimming with collaborations with major brands, regularly gets new season passes, story updates, and gameplay innovations, and even gets a completely new map every few months. The story of Fortnite is surprisingly complex and has not only long since crossed its own franchise boundaries, but has literally blown them apart.
In part, the lore provides solid reasons why the Avengers, Batman, Son Goku, Invincible, Geralt of Riva and Ciri, Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader, Ariana Grande and Peter Griffin, as well as the T-800 and Homer Simpson jump out of the Battle Bus.
Every few months, this story culminates in a large and unique live event that the Fortnite community eagerly anticipates each time. And for good reason: these events only take place once and (as the name suggests) live.
If you overslept, had better things to do, or simply had an internet outage, you’re out of luck and will have to settle for one of the countless gameplay clips on YouTube.
If you had plans last Saturday (November 29, 2025), then you really missed out!
Zero Hour brought a particularly long story arc and a particularly packed season to a close with a big bang. It would be beyond the scope of this article to summarize the plot for you here. That’s why I recommend checking out the story recap by my favorite Fortnite YouTuber Adamaru:
Let me show you how it’s done done done
All you really need to know is this: The last chapter of Fortnite was bursting with collaborations! Among others, Superman, the Avengers, Scorpion and Sub-Zero from Mortal Kombat, Invincible, the Spartans from Halo, the Power Rangers with their Megazord, the Scooby Gang, Huntrix, Godzilla, the Simpsons, and many, many more were involved.
So it would have been a complete waste if Epic hadn’t drawn on this cornucopia of well-known brands for the Fortnite chapter finale. The obvious solution: to stage a final battle clearly inspired by Avengers: Endgame, in which so much happens at once that you can’t help but lose track!
Fortnite’s poster children Jonesy and Hope drum up reinforcements from all universes to finish off the big boss (a fat tentacle demon).
Wearing my current favorite skin (a specially designed Mandalorian), I fly aboard a helicopter over an army of heroes and heroines from my childhood toward the evil big boss named The Dark Presence
, while How it’s Done
by KPop Demon Hunters blares from the speakers. Later, I’m sitting in the back seat of a motorcycle with two submachine guns, while the bride from Kill Bill fillets a giant tentacle with her Hattori Hanzo.
My two personal highlights of the event: Hatsune Miku firing her Miku Miku Beam from the top of Godzilla’s head, while a giant Homer Simpson in his underwear strangles one of the Demon King’s tentacles. (… that sounds kind of suggestive.)
And this is where Fortnite plays to one of its greatest strengths, which no other video game has – no matter how hard they try. (Yes, we’re talking about you, Call of Duty.) Epic knows how to leverage the sheer volume of collaborations from all kinds of franchises to conjure up its own endgame moment.
It’s one of those moments that makes me glad I fell in love with Fortnite three years ago and have remained loyal ever since. And also that I may have put one or two service games on hold for it.
Fortnite continues to captivate me, but of course, it’s not above criticism. Even now, in Chapter 7, there are already a few brand-new controversies (see above).
Questionable UI updates, controversial changes to the Battle Pass and level system, and the use of AI that simply wasn’t needed in this form. Now Epic just has to respond to the vocal criticism from the community.
The fact that they already do a lot of things right was proven once again by the last event.
