Return to Silent Hill is set to bring the story from Silent Hill 2, beloved by many horror fans, to the big screen. It is directed by Christophe Gans, who was also responsible for the first Silent Hill movie in 2006.

The story centers on James (Jeremy Irvine), who travels to the fog-shrouded town because his deceased wife Mary (Hannah Emily Anderson) asked him to in a letter from the afterlife. However, instead of his great love in angelic form, a bunch of grotesque creatures await him there. James’ journey takes him deeper and deeper into the town and into his own psyche.

The first teaser already made fans of the survival horror game suspicious, and the new trailer further reinforces these doubts for many. In addition to ridicule, the comments on YouTube are filled with a number of criticisms. For example, wtfiseventhat asks, “Why does James look like an oversized indie rocker? He’s supposed to be a broken man…” Kmyk9 finds Mary’s legendary letter to James inappropriate: “I’m shocked at how badly they messed up the opening letter. That was literally the most iconic moment of the game.”

But there are also more hopeful voices. DjArpegius writes: “Same director as the original movie. Wow, he must really love the game! I loved the first movie. Can’t wait!” Under another link, DeAnoJackson writes: “This actually looks much better than I expected. I’m cautiously optimistic!”

Return to Silent Hill will be released in German cinemas on February 5, 2026. If you want to see it on the big screen sooner, you might find what you’re looking for in our big cinema overview for 2025.
