Are these the first screenshots from Far Cry 7? Yes and no, because the leak with the first images and information is unusually complicated.

Far Cry 7 will probably be split into two games: a credible screenshot leak reveals the single-player campaign Blackbird and the extraction shooter Maverick.

Ubisoft is developing not just one new Far Cry game, but two. In addition to the classic Far Cry 7, codenamed Blackbird, rumors suggest that an extraction shooter called Maverick is also in the works.

The latter has had a complicated development history, but now screenshots have emerged that could show both the single-player campaign and the multiplayer spin-off. The images are said to have been extracted, along with further details, by data miners from game files of Ubisoft’s online shooter XDefiant.

The usually well-informed website Insider Gaming considers the leak to be realistic and claims to have additional images and concept art that “match the actual screenshots.”

Leaked screenshots: Is this the new Far Cry? And if so, which one?

The most interesting thing about the latest leak is the confusion surrounding the leaked screenshots, which appear to be from an older build. Among other things, they show a scoreboard with team names such as “Renegades” and “Terror Kings.” A buggy on a kind of race track is also pictured.

On the short message service X, the website GameGPU mentions an Alaska setting, but palm trees and Mayan-style pyramids and temples can be seen:

According to Insider Gaming, however, these are screenshots from a discontinued predecessor project developed under the code name Talisker. Talisker was originally planned as Far Cry 7 before it was scrapped in favor of the Blackbird and Maverick projects.

It was supposed to have team-based elimination multiplayer, which would explain the scoreboards. One screenshot shows a mutated giant creature dragging away a dead player. Allegedly, experiments with animals were a theme in the original Talisker story.

Insider Gaming suspects that this mutation aspect will at least be incorporated into the story of Far Cry 7 (Blackbird), while the extraction shooter Maverick will likely focus on realistic wildlife such as wolves and bears – if the project survives at all. Maverick could be canceled before its release.

Far Cry 7 with a time limit?

The alleged premise of Far Cry 7 (Blackbird): The Beckett family (presumably pictured in one of the leaked screenshots) has been kidnapped. As one of its members, you must rescue your relatives within a strict time frame of three virtual days.

We’re talking about 72 in-game hours, which should amount to 24 hours of playtime in real time. According to rumors, the time limit is displayed to the player via a watch on their wrist and only pauses when you are in a safe house.

The non-linear narrative structure is supposed to give you the freedom to rescue family members in any order – but that also means that some of them could die if you don’t meet the time limit.

Further unconfirmed information from a data miner named Rogue suggests a release date of late 2027, with the Snowdrop engine being used for the technology and one of the playable characters being a man in his thirties.

Kevin Durand, known from series such as The Strain and films such as Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, could take on one of the roles in the game. It is unclear whether he will play the hero or the antagonist.
