In multiplayer shooters, the tick rate is crucial to the gaming experience. The new Battlefield ranks in the upper mid-range.
Battlefield 6 is coming out at the end of the week, and fans are trying to find out as much as possible about the new multiplayer shooter from DICE. The community has many questions, which Battlefield’s lead producer David Sirland is trying to answer as best he can, for example via X. One such question is from a user about the server tick rate.
What exactly is the server tick rate?
This refers to the frequency (measured in hertz) at which a game’s servers are updated and sent to the player. The tick rate therefore indicates how often per second a player receives an up-to-date image of the game world. High tick rates ensure a smoother gaming experience, but in return also lead to a significantly higher load on the servers.
Battlefield 6: Server tick rate announced
In a post on X , Sirland explains that the multiplayer servers for Battlefield 6 will have a tick rate of 60 hertz. He does not differentiate between the PC and console versions in his statement.
1. Not sure what you mean?
2. 60hz is the base for now
3. Yes and its per map
4. Not planned now
5. No, not now. We opted for peek & lean— David Sirland (@tiggr_) October 3, 2025
The Battlefield comparison
Compared to its predecessor, Battlefield 2042, this is definitely a step forward. As lead game designer Florian LeBihan explained in an X post in 2022, the 2042 servers ran at a tick rate of 45 hertz on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S & X.
The older consoles, the PS4 and Xbox One, had to make do with a tick rate of 20 hertz, which is clearly insufficient for a multiplayer shooter from 2021.
The predecessors were significantly further ahead, at least on the PC. Both Battlefield 5 and Battlefield 1 ran at 60 Hertz – the console versions at 30 Hertz.
Where does Battlefield 6 rank among multiplayer shooters?
Competitor Call of Duty uses 60 Hz for classic 6v6 multiplayer, but the battle royale variant Warzone only has 20 Hz servers, much to the chagrin of fans.
FPS veteran Counter-Strike 2 lets its players compete on 64-Hertz servers, and the Valorant community can even enjoy 128 Hertz.& nbsp;
Of course, factors such as map size and number of players are relevant to how high a server’s tick rate can be without leading to a large server load.
This means that higher server capacities are required, which also means higher costs. Battlefield 6 is well positioned with 60 Hertz for now – we’ll find out just how well on October 10, 2025.
