Gauntlet mode sounds very different from what we know of Battlefield so far. However, fans of The Finals will find it very familiar.

Two years ago, Embark—a studio founded by longtime Battlefield developers from Sweden—released its first shooter, The Finals.

Instead of large battles, The Finals focuses on a competitive squad format in which several groups compete for victory in a knockout system.

A new leak now makes it clear: Battlefield 6 apparently wants to emulate this very principle.

Where does the information come from?

The leak comes from Temporyal, who has long earned a reputation as a reliable source in the Battlefield community thanks to his accurate data mining.

He found the first details about the gameplay of Gauntlet in the BF Labs game files – an additional multiplayer mode that is presumably being developed not by Dice, but by Ripple Effect (where Battle Royale is also being developed).

Gauntlet is a turn-based mode with an elimination principle. It’s not two large teams playing against each other. Instead, individual squads compete against each other and must complete a series of missions to advance to the next phase of the game, while the squads with the lowest scores are gradually eliminated.

How does it work?

According to Temporyal, the mode works as follows:

  • Gauntlet takes place on the large Battle Royale map set in the USA.
  • Players must work together in squads to complete missions.
  • Four mission types are randomly selected in succession per match.
  • After each mission, the squads with the lowest scores are eliminated.
  • The winner is the squad that reaches the point target first in the final.

There are additional modifiers that are activated randomly, including double points in the final minute of a mission or a kind of “sudden death” where teams are immediately eliminated if they are wiped out.

The mode will most likely be Free2Play (like the BR mode) and can be customized via the BF6 Portal.

Connoisseurs will of course notice immediately: This game principle corresponds almost 1:1 to what the Battlefield veterans at Embark 2023 had in mind for The Finals .

What missions are there?

The following mission types are known so far from the leak and can occur within a Gauntlet round:

  • Vendetta: Players must eliminate specific targets in enemy squads while defending their own VIP.
  • Wreckage: Players must find bombs and use them to destroy M-COMs, with the detonator starting to run as soon as the bomb is picked up.
  • Circuit: Players must capture and hold points in a linear sequence, similar to Chain Link in Battlefield 4.
  • Contract: Players must track down and eliminate enemy squads; a wipe automatically results in elimination from the tournament.
  • Heist: Players must steal intelligence from the enemy headquarters; whoever is carrying the intelligence is marked for enemies.
  • Extraction: Players must locate data carriers, hand them over to drones at an exfil point, and watch out for traps.
  • Deadlock: Players must capture and hold specific zones. Squads can split up and capture multiple zones.
  • Decryption: Players must find signal stations and decrypt them along the way, but the process is paused when sprinting.

Can Battlefield 6 build on the success of The Finals with this mode and successfully expand the gameplay to include BF features such as vehicles and the class system? It remains to be seen. A major attack on CoD Warzone is also planned: In addition to Gauntlet, there will also be a classic Battle Royale (probably starting in Season 1 of BF6), with the Firestorm from BF5: Firestorm making a comeback.
