Yes, Baldur’s Gate 4 is really coming, but you should definitely read the fine print.

After its predecessor was, to put it mildly, a decent success, it is now certain that Baldur’s Gate 4 is really coming. But curb your excitement.

Baldur’s Gate 3 has probably won more awards than Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, so it was only a matter of time before publisher and license holder Wizards of the Coast seriously considered a sequel. And lo and behold: now we know it’s official from Wizards of the Coast. In an interview with TheGameBusiness, WotC President John Hight talks about Baldur’s Gate 4 and says clearly that the game will… well, eventually. His exact words are:

Baldur’s Gate is an incredible game. And of course we’re going to make a sequel.

At the same time, he dispels any hopes that he is here right now in this interview to talk about Baldur’s Gate 4, because he is actually sitting in the room to talk about a completely different project: the one from developer Giant Skull. Giant Skull already made headlines during the Summer Game Fest 2025 in early June because they are working on a yet-to-be-named Dungeons & Dragons project.

Behind Giant Skull are various industry veterans, including Stig Asmussen, who was in charge at Respawn until 2023 – responsible for hits such as Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, among others. Wizard of the Coast boss Hight also picks up on this thread in the interview.

However, the game we’re talking about here is not Baldur’s Gate 4. We’re turning to Stig and his team to tell an incredible story and bring D&D to a very wide audience. Ideally, the game will appeal to D&D players because it helps them realize their imagination. But hopefully it will also appeal to people who love action games, who love Jedi games, who love God of War games.

So Giant Skull’s project seems to be heading in a much more action-packed direction than a classic role-playing game like Baldur’s Gate. Back in March 2025, Dan Ayoub, Senior Vice President of Digital Games at Hasbro (the company behind Wizards of the Coast), spoke about Baldur’s Gate 4 and confirmed that the game was in the early stages of planning. What we also know is that Baldur’s Gate 4 will definitely not be developed by Larian. Larian boss Swen Vincke confirmed this months ago. Whoever takes on the job will have very, very, very big shoes to fill – and that’s no trivial matter: Baldur’s Gate 3’s timeless success is largely due to the fact that Larian is one of the best studios in the world and had already delivered an absolute masterpiece with Divinity: Original Sin 2.

There are very few studios that can currently boast such a portfolio. But we’ll wait and see, because even Larian started out small in the distant past.
